The Öffentliche Kunstsammlung Basel (Basel public art collection) consists of the Kunstmuseum Basel (Basel art museum), the Kupferstichkabinett (copper etchings gallery) and the Museum für Gegenwartskunst (museum of contemporary art).

The Kunstmuseum Basel houses the collections of the picture gallery and the copper etchings gallery. Its main focus is on the paintings and drawings of the Upper Rhine region and the Netherlands dating from between 1400 and 1600, and 19th and 20th century art.

Not only Paul Gauguin's world-famous painting Nafea Faa ipoipo but also other outstanding works of Impressionism and early Modernism from the Rudolf Staechelin Collection return to the Kunstmuseum Basel as permanent loans. They had been guests of the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth since 1997.

The Öffentliche Kunstsammlung Basel possesses the world’s largest collection of works by the Holbein family. The Renaissance is further represented by important works by Konrad Witz, Martin Schongauer, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Mathias Grünewald and others. These older parts of the collection are mostly from the collection of Basilius Amerbach from Basel. In 1661 the collection was bought by the city of Basel and put on display as part of the city’s first museum open to the public.

Highlights of 19th century art are the paintings by Arnold Böcklin from Basel. Our 20th century art collection focuses mainly on cubism (Picasso, Braque and Gris), German expressionism, abstract expressionism and pop art. Contemporary art dating from the 1960’s to the present day is displayed in the Museum für Gegenwartskunst.

The Museum für Gegenwartskunst is a joint creation by the Emanuel-Hoffmann foundation, the Christoph-Merian foundation and the canton of Basel-Stadt. The architects Wilfrid and Katharina Steib converted a factory building from the last century, combining the old structure with modern architecture to create an attractive whole that blends into its surroundings in the old town in perfect harmony.

The museum displays works dating from the 1960’s to the present day, from minimal art and conceptual art through the German Neuen Wilden (New Wild Ones) - or neo-expressionist painters - to the latest installations. The main focus here is on the works of Frank Stella, Bruce Nauman, A. R. Penck, Joseph Beuys and Rosemarie Trockel.
